Job Description:
The Department of Philosophy at Florida State University, in collaboration with The Florida Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC), invites applications for one or two positions in the Philosophy Department, at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank, with an area of specialization in the history of modern political philosophy or the philosophy of law/constitutionalism. These are full-time, 9-month, tenured or tenure-track positions with an anticipated start date of August 7, 2025. Salary is competitive.
We seek scholars who have interests in the philosophical foundations of the U.S. republic and a demonstrated commitment to the mission of enhancing civic understanding and awareness. Any successful candidate will be expected to teach a course on the philosophical foundations of American constitutionalism and to engage in IGC programming.
Candidates who possess experience with public-facing civics initiatives are desired.
The normal teaching load is four courses per year (2-2) on a semester system. Duties include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service. The Department of Philosophy is an active research department with a strong graduate program, and a successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high quality publications in top-tier venues.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Philosophy or equivalent terminal degree at the time of appointment;
- Interest in connecting scholarship and teaching to civic education, constitutionalism, and civic virtue;
- A clear record of research activity equivalent to that of an associate professor (if seeking that rank) or full professor (if seeking that rank) at an R1 research university;
- An established record of successful teaching at the university level, commensurate with the rank being sought, and a demonstrated ability to teach and participate in our strong philosophy undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. programs.

The Institute for Governance and Civics was created, in part, to provide students with access to an interdisciplinary hub that will develop academically rigorous scholarship and coursework on the origins of the American system of government, its foundational documents, its subsequent political traditions and evolutions, and its impact on comparative political systems.
The IGC works with departments, schools, and colleges on the FSU campus to hire faculty, to fund research, and to create relevant programming. The IGC funds faculty lines. Tenured and tenure-track faculty are subject to the rules and requirements of their tenure-home departments.
About the Philosophy Department
The Philosophy Department has a strong faculty working in a variety of areas, including logic, ancient and modern philosophy, ethics, social and political philosophy, action theory, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science. In addition to its Colloquium Series, the department regularly hosts Werkmeister Conferences and Workshops, as well as an annual Free Will Conference and a Minorities and Philosophy Conference. The department publishes Social Theory and Practice, a leading journal in social and political philosophy.

The Department of History at Florida State University, in collaboration with the Florida Institute for Governance and Civics, invites applications for a position in the History department, at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the history of early America (before 1820). This is a full-time, 9-month, tenured or tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 2025. The area of specialization is open.
The successful candidate will be expected to work with the department’s undergraduate and graduate students, supervise PhD candidates, and teach two courses per semester. A commitment to the mission of enhancing civic and historical awareness as well as a readiness to contribute to the intellectual life and programmatic development of the IGC is expected.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization is required

Job Description:
- Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree upon taking the position. Expertise is required in the specific area of polling and data analysis. Responsibilities may include designing and carrying out experiments, creating surveys and conducting polling, collecting and aggregating data from various sources, estimating regression models and other empirical analyses, presenting findings at public meetings and conferences, advising the Director on research questions and methods, and assisting various PIs affiliated with the IGC in their grant and paper writing. Candidates who also can conduct cost-benefit analyses are desired but not required.
