IGC at Word of South: An Afternoon with MLB Legend Mike Matheny

Date & Time: April 25th, 2026 @ 3:30 PM
Location: AC Marriott Ballroom

Join the Institute for Governance & Civics at the Word of South Festival for a special conversation with former Major League Baseball player, manager, and New York Times bestselling author Mike Matheny.

Over a 13-year career as an MLB catcher, Matheny earned four Gold Gloves and set defensive records for consistency and toughness. As manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, he made history as the first MLB manager to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. Today, he is one of the most respected voices on leadership in sports and business, inspiring audiences with his Competitive EDGES framework: Educate, Discipline, Grit, Enthusiasm, and Selflessness.

During this special event, Matheny will discuss the themes of his bestselling book, The Matheny Manifesto, and share hard-earned wisdom on how to “Grow to the Right, Love the Fight, and Lead through Service.”

Mike will be interviewed by Tallahassee's own Adam Faurot, with special musical accompaniment by the FSU Brass Quintet.

Special Bonus: We will be giving away FREE copies of Matheny's books The Dad Coach and The Matheny Manifesto to the first 40 attendees.
